Waste Management: KPCC President Blames Govt, Corporation, and Railways for

Thiruvananthapuram: State govt, city corporation and railway authorities cannot run away from the responsibility of sanitation worker Joy’s death in Amayizhanjan canal, said KPCC president K Sudhakaran on Monday.“A serious failure in waste disposal created hurdles for the rescue operation. Even after a three-day long search, Joy could not be found alive because of the piled-up garbage. This is a matter that should open the eyes of the authorities. The service of the mission team, including the fire brigade personnel, who risked their lives and took part in the rescue operation canal, was commendable and they should be given due recognition,” said Sudhakaran.Failure of the concerned authorities to clean the waste at the canal led to the tragic end of a sanitation worker, he said. “The administrators are responsible for this tragedy that happened to Joy’s family. The action of govt, the municipal corporation and railways who failed to dispose of the waste on time is heinous and insulting. Govt and Indian Railways should be ready to give a befitting compensation to Joy’s family,” he added.Waste management in the city is the responsibility of the city corporation, said Sudhakaran. “A blame game when such incidents happen is not a solution to the crisis. Instead, adequate action is necessary to avoid such incidents at least in future,” he said.Sudhakaran pointed out the relevance of Operation Ananta, which was initiated during the Oommen Chandy govt, for cleaning the canals in the state capital. “Railways have a social commitment and responsibility to facilitate the flow of water by removing garbage in tunnels under platforms. The accumulation of garbage on roads, streams and ditches is also a testimony to the fact that waste management at source is not being done effectively in the state,” he added.
