Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) is set to reduce the solid waste management (SWM) cess for industries in the city soon. Currently, the MCC collects Rs 6,000 per year as SWM cess from industries for each 1,000sqft area. In comparison, the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation collects Rs 1,200 for each 1,000sqft area, and in Mysuru city, it is Rs 2,400.For areas above 1,000sqft and up to 2,000 sqft, the SWM cess in MCC is Rs 12,000, while it is Rs 2,400 in Hubballi-Dharwad and Rs 4,800 in Mysuru. Meanwhile, for areas above 2,001sqft and up to 5,000sqft, the cess in MCC is Rs 18,000, while it is Rs 2,400 in Hubballi-Dharwad and Rs 4,800 in Mysuru. For areas above 5,000sqft, the MCC charges 10% extra for each additional 1,000sqft. In Hubballi-Dharwad, the cess for areas above 5,000sqft is Rs 3,600, and it is Rs 7,200 in Mysuru, according to officials.The Kanara Industries Association (KIA) had demanded that the SWM cess should be Rs 1,500 for up to 1,000sqft, Rs 3,000 for 1,001sqft to 5,000sqft, and Rs 4,500 for above 5,000sqft. Considering the request from the KIA, the MCC decided to revise the SWM cess to align with Mysuru’s rates. However, a circular in this regard is yet to be issued by the MCC.Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur said that the proposal to revise the SWM cess for industries in the city has been approved at a council meeting held recently. “Very soon, the cess will be revised based on the rate being collected in Mysuru,” he added.In fact, the KIA has been urging the MCC to reduce the SWM cess for industries for many years. The association had raised the issue at an interaction meeting of the MCC held in November 2022. The KIA had pointed out that the high rate of SWM cess in MCC has been affecting small industrial units.
