Andrew Steven Martin, 30, of Silver Spring, pled guilty to unlawful possession of U.S. Postal Service (USPS) keys that are used to access postal service mail receptacles.
Martin also pled guilty to being a felon in possession of ammunition.
On May 17, 2022, a Gaithersburg City police officer stopped Martin while he was driving. When approaching his car, the officer smelled marijuana from the passenger side, according to the U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland’s office.
Police recovered a bag containing marijuana, a half-smoked joint and two U.S.P.S. arrow keys, one of which opened two collection boxes outside the Reisterstown Police Office.
Police also recovered a stack of credit cards, two identification cards, five debit cards and 47 checks bearing the names of payors and payees who were not Martin. Officers also found a privately made 9 mm semi-automatic pistol loaded with ten 9mm caliber ammunition cartridges and an orange pill bottle containing 27 tablets that were found to contain heroin and fentanyl, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.
The sum of the money from the checks amounted to slightly more than $80,000.
Martin faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison for being a felon in possession of ammunition and for illegal possession of USPS arrow keys. He will be sentenced April 30.
