A Maryland day at Assateague: choose the right park and plan your visit

Plan national-seashore admission and an unhurried outing on the Eastern Shore.

A Maryland day at Assateague works best when you decide which park you mean before setting out. The island includes both a national seashore and a separately managed state park. Our suggestion is to choose one destination and leave room for an unhurried beach stop.

Start with the right entrance

The National Park Service describes Assateague as a 37-mile island along Maryland and Virginia. Most of its Maryland district is national seashore; Maryland manages a separate two-mile state park. There is no vehicle route connecting the island's north and south districts. To drive between them, return to the mainland.

Check the official visitor information and park map before using a saved destination in your navigation app. Avoid planning a casual drive down the island into Virginia.

Budget for the national seashore

The NPS fees page lists a $25 private-vehicle pass valid for seven days. Its $45 annual park pass covers the national seashore's Maryland and Virginia districts. Check whether an existing federal recreation pass covers your entrance.

Assateague State Park passes do not cover the national seashore or Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. These are different admissions; passes with “Assateague” in the name are not necessarily interchangeable. The Maryland national-seashore district lists no entrance fee for arriving on foot or bicycle.

Pack for a slower day

NPS advises bringing needed food and water because island supplies are limited. Keep food secured from wildlife. Biting insects can persist from spring through autumn; pack repellent or protective clothing.

Our suggested approach is to bring a picnic, keep the schedule flexible and check the current-conditions link on the visitor-information page before departure. The national seashore is open year-round; individual services can be seasonal.
