Laredo Asst. Utilities Director steps down amid boil water notice

LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) — On Wednesday, October 16, KGNS confirmed that Arturo Garcia is no longer Laredo’s Assistant Utilities Director.

The City of Laredo has named Ramon Chavez as the new Assistant Utilities Director. An interim Utilities Director is set to begin on October 21.

This comes on day six of the boil water notice, which started on Thursday, October 10, after E. coli was found in the city’s water. City officials have not yet provided additional details or a comment regarding Garcia’s resignation.

Before the boil water notice, Garcia had been referred to as the director of the Utilities Department. It wasn’t until recent press conferences that he was referred to as the Assistant Utilities Director.

The boil water notice remains in effect as the city works to resolve the contamination issue.

This is a developing story, and more updates are expected as the situation unfolds.

Below is the full press release from the City of Laredo:

The City of Laredo announces that Arturo Garcia, Assistant Director of the Utilities Department, has resigned from his position, effective today, Wednesday, October 16, 2024.

In a recent statement, Mayor Dr. Victor D. Treviño addressed the resignation:

“The City Manager had mentioned in the previous press conference that there was going to be a ground-up restructuring of the Utilities Department. This is in combination with the approval of the interim director for the Utilities Department, who will begin on Monday, October 21st.”

The City of Laredo will not comment further on this matter as it pertains to an employee matter. Furthermore, the community should be aware that many Utilities employees, and field staff are working around the clock to address the current water-related concerns.
