InterDigital Wins FRAND Licensing Case Against Lenovo in UK Court of Appeal

InterDigital, a leading mobile, video, and AI technology research and development company, has emerged victorious in its FRAND licensing case against Lenovo in the UK’s Court of Appeal. The court ruled in favor of InterDigital, affirming the company’s rights to its cellular Standard Essential Patents (SEPs) and increasing the amount Lenovo must pay for a license.

Lenovo’s appeal was rejected in its entirety, with the court also mandating that Lenovo must compensate InterDigital for all of its past sales dating back to 2007. As a result, Lenovo will be required to pay an additional sum exceeding $55 million, bringing the total payment for past sales through December 31, 2023, to approximately $240 million.

Josh Schmidt, Chief Legal Officer at InterDigital, expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision, stating, ‘This ruling acknowledges the value of our cellular wireless innovation and represents another significant win for InterDigital in our licensing dispute with Lenovo.’ Schmidt further emphasized the importance of achieving a balance between innovators and implementers, noting that the ruling makes it more challenging for implementers like Lenovo to delay obtaining licenses for patented technologies that underpin connected devices.

Highlighting the ongoing licensing dispute, Schmidt confirmed that Lenovo remains unlicensed to InterDigital’s cellular portfolio since the beginning of this year. However, InterDigital remains committed to reaching an agreement with Lenovo that includes fair compensation for its patented technologies.
