Garfield County prep sports roundup for Sept. 30 through Oct. 5

Football

Running back Mason Markovich continued to eat up gridiron real estate, rushing for 210 yards and scoring 5 touchdowns to lead Glenwood Springs (4-2) past Conifer 39-14 on homecoming Friday night. The Demons, looking every bit the part of a 3A state contender, also got a major contribution from the shifty maneuvering of wideout Jerick Sorensen who broke free for several long gains. Glenwood will open conference play on Thursday night at Stubler Memorial Field against Eagle Valley. Grand Valley picked up its first win of the season, spoiling Roaring Fork’s homecoming, 23-14. The Rams will stay at home Friday night against state-ranked Meeker. Coal Ridge (4-1) set up a Friday night league showdown at unbeaten Basalt with a 40-16 road win in Craig against Moffat County. Rifle was idle. They will travel to face Palisade on Friday night.

Volleyball

Glenwood Springs (8-3) lost a nail-biting 3-2 conference match to Battle Mountain on Tuesday. The Demons will travel to Eagle Valley this Tuesday before hosting Rifle on Thursday. While on the subject of the Bears (2-8), Coach Amber Rowe’s crew lost on the road Tuesday 3-0 at Delta and then made a Thursday trip over the mountains to Summit. The Bears picked up a 3-1 win in Frisco and will next host undefeated Battle Mountain on Tuesday.  Roaring Fork (4-9) got a homecoming win 3-1 against Grand Valley (4-12). The Rams will try to make it two in a row when they will entertain Moffat County on Thursday. The Coal Ridge girls (6-8) lost to Aspen 3-1 on Thursday and then made a Saturday trek to Rangely and got a 3-1 match win.

Soccer

Glenwood (5-3-1) had a busy and highly productive homecoming week that started with a 6-0 trouncing of Palisade at Stubler Memorial Field on Tuesday. The Demons completed the week with a 7-1 win over Summit on Thursday and a 5-3 decision against Montrose on Saturday afternoon.  Roaring Fork (6-2-1) beat Basalt 3-1 on Tuesday and made a trip to Delta on Wednesday, securing a 1-0 win. The Rams will host Aspen on Tuesday and travel to Glenwood on Friday. Rifle (6-2-1) threw a 10-0 shutout at Moffat County on Tuesday, then traveled to Steamboat on Thursday and fought the Sailors to a 2-2 draw. Grand Valley (4-6) got a 3-2 win over Caprock Academy on Tuesday.

Cross country

Glenwood and Coal Ridge attended the Pantherfest Cross Country Meet on Friday at Confluence Park in Delta. Coal Ridge’s boys and girls turned in strong performances with 5th and 4th place team finishes. Jake Curt (17 minutes, 13 seconds, 12th) led the Titan boys. Brody Evans (17:33), Owen Evans (17:46), and Kevin Parker (17:52) also ran sub 18 minute times for Coal Ridge. Effie Fletcher (18:45, 3rd) paced the Titan girls, with Hailey Whitman (19:48, 14th) also contributing to the scoring. Glenwood’s boys were 9th as a team. Finn Long (17:54, 30th) was the top Demon and Tanner Merritt (18:31, 39th) was close behind. For the Glenwood girls, Eva Hassel (23:35, 90th) led the charge.

Softball

Rifle (8-12) was at Delta on Tuesday and lost a 12-2 decision to the Panthers. The Bears will wrap up their regular season schedule this week with a home game Tuesday (Basalt) and Friday (Cedaredge).  Sandwiched in between those two will be a Wednesday trip to Palisade. Playoff pairings will be released Sunday afternoon.

Golf

The Snowmass Club hosted the boys’ regional golf tournament this past week. Coal Ridge placed 5th as a team. The Titan leaders were junior Zach Poland who carded an 8-over-par 80, good for a 10th place tie individually. Senior Landin Herrera shot 81, and senior Jakson Slade completed his round with an 85. Rifle, coached by Cody Nelson, entered the clubhouse 7th as a team. Junior Josh Shanks had a solid round of 80 to put him in a 4-way tie for 10th overall. Sophomore Waylon Panter shot 81 for a 14th place tie. Senior Andrew Palcer carded a 91 for 31st place.
