Avista asking customers to cut back on natural gas as a result of mechanical

SPOKANE, Wash. — Avista is asking its customers to conserve natural gas as a result of a mechanical issue occurring with a natural gas provider with the company.

The company said the pipeline supplier’s issue is affecting Avista’s ability to supply natural gas for its customer’s homes and businesses throughout its service territory. The company said it will release updates on the situation by Saturday morning.

The utility company has already requested Washington and Idaho natural gas customers to cut back on usage and said its local gas system is safe and was not damaged by the equipment issue. Those customers are being asked to conserve their natural gas for the next 24 hours.

“Our gas transmission suppliers are working diligently to resolve this issue,” said Heather Rosentrater Avista President and Chief Operating Officer. “We recognize the hardship this request presents our customers given the extreme cold temperatures. We will provide more updates as the situation evolves. We are grateful for everyone’s patience and please know we are working around-the-clock to mitigate impact to our customers.”

Avista released the following statement to customers:

As a natural gas customer, we ask you to conserve gas for the next 24 hours. There is a mechanical issue with a natural gas provider for Avista, affecting our natural gas supply.

We recognize this comes when our region is facing extremely cold temperatures. We appreciate your patience and assistance as the supplier works to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. In the meantime, we are asking that you set thermostats at a lower setting and limit the use of hot water.

It’s important to know the local gas system is safe and was not damaged by the third party’s equipment issue. We are doing all we can to maintain natural gas system operations, and we will provide updates as more information is available from the supplier.

Customers who need additional support due to the cold weather can cal 211 or visit www.wa211.org or www.211.idaho.gov.
