Saudi Arabia: Military industries sign three agreements with Turkish companies


Saudi Arabia’s military industries, represented by Sami (Saudi Arabian Military Industries) have signed three agreements with Turkish companies to locate defense activities in the fields of aviation, space and technology within the Kingdom. This step, reports the “Arab News” website, is in line with Sami’s goal of contributing to the localization of 50 percent of Saudi Arabia’s total public defense spending, in accordance with Saudi Vision 2030. In in particular, the group owned by the Public Investment Fund (Pif) has signed memoranda of understanding with Baykar, a Turkish drone manufacturer, Fergani Space, a technology company, and Aselsan, an aerospace and defense company.

At the signing of the agreements, which took place in the presence of the Saudi Defense Minister, the prince Khalid bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, the CEO of Sami, Waleed Abukhaled, stated that such agreements “will contribute to improving our capabilities and the continued development of the national defense industry.” Abukhaled added: “These strategic agreements will help increase the share of gross domestic product through international cooperation and work with local supply chains.” The agreement with Baykar, in particular, provides for the creation of production capacities and the development of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAC) systems in the Kingdom, including the joint development and transfer of technology and intellectual property to Saudi Arabia. The memorandum of understanding with Fergani Space provides for the creation of a center of excellence for the development of emerging technologies serving the global space sector. Finally, the agreement with Aselsan aims to explore opportunities for the transfer, localization and development of advanced electronic technologies to enhance and build national capabilities in this sector.
