NAMIWalks raising funds to promote education, awareness of mental illness

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – The Pine Belt Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness hosted an annual event Saturday, which raised awareness about mental illness while bringing in funds for advocacy and education.

Saturday’s ninth annual NAMIWalks event was held, for the first time at Town Square Park in downtown Hattiesburg.

Dozens of participants made several trips around the park as part of the event.

More than one dozen vendors, representing several community organizations, also took part.

NAMI’s Pine Belt chapter set a goal of raising about $15,000 from the event this year.

“Last year, we set our goal at $10,000, (and) for the last two years, we met our goal,” said Mavis Creagh, NAMI Pine Belt president. “As of (Saturday), we’re at $11,000 of that $15,000, so we’re very thankful for everybody and we’re still taking donations.”
