Govt wants to improve commodity market system: State minister

The government wants to improve the commodity market system, State Minister for Commerce Ahsanul Islam Titu has said, BSS reports.

“Our first priority is to improve the market system of commodities. We’ve talked with the suppliers of food commodities in this regard,” he said while answering reporters’ queries after inaugurating the riverbank protection work of different areas under Nagarpur upazila of Tangail and Daulatpur upazila of Manikganj district along the River Jamuna on Saturday.

The state minister argued that if there is a sufficient supply of commodities, then none will go for hoarding.

Typically, when a commodity supply crisis emerges, many people, including traders, engage in hoarding, which intensifies the crisis and allows them to make greater profits.

Titu noted that the state-run Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) is offering essential items to some 10 million low-income group families at subsidised prices throughout the year, including Ramadan.

He said the government has already taken initiatives so that the prices of commodities remain affordable.

To keep the prices of essentials within the purchasing power of people was a first priority in the election manifesto announced by the prime minister, the state minister added.

Furthermore, he added, TCB’s volume and coverage will be expanded.

Earlier on Friday, people from all walks of life of Goyhata Union accorded a reception to Titu at Goyhata Uday Tara High School Ground in Nagarpur, Tangail for his appointment as state minister for commerce. Nagarpur is part of the Tangail-6 constituency, where Titu was elected as MP.
