(Little Rock, KATV) — The Office of State Auditor Dennis Milligan is giving back to individuals and organizations across the state through the Great Arkansas Treasure Hunt, locating hundreds of thousands of dollars in unclaimed property.
The help from the state auditor’s office has ranged from citizens, to businesses, in securing unclaimed property, and most recently non-profits already totaling over $150,000 this year alone to claim.
“The technical name would be unclaimed property, but we think that having great Arkansas treasure hunt certainly spurs a lot of interest,” Milligan said.
Arkansas State Auditor Dennis Milligan is taking an extra step to help nonprofits in their efforts to better our communities.
“Tuesday, I gave a nonprofit back 40 thousand dollars of their money. Because guess what? It is their money. We’ve given the Saline County Humane Society $7500. We’ve given Civitan Services some $22,000 so all these moneys especially for the non-profits they can always use that money,” Milligan said.
Uncovering unclaimed property from financial accounts such as stocks, overpayments, unreturned utility deposits and more.
“And it’s not necessarily always money. We actually have a vault where we have things like jewelry, we have watches, we have medals, war medals. We even have a baseball signed by Babe Ruth,’ Milligan said.
Since his start in 2023, over $52 million dollars to Americans through The Great Arkansas Treasure Hunt has been returned.
“And it actually gets put into our economic system so it’s producing. Helping produce a job, helping to produce, perhaps buying some other type of supply or whatever so getting it back into the economy, it’s a win win for Arkansas,” Milligan said.
“One in four Arkansans are owed money so it’s pretty good odds that I owe you some money,” Milligan said.
“I have over $400 million dollars that I’m trying to return to Arkansans. Nonprofits. Businesses. Individuals. School Districts,” Milligan added.
